Indian Rupee Update: Lower Oil Prices Offer Limited Support
Advisory Bazaar Info Services
The Indian rupee is expected to trade with a mild positive bias after crude oil prices eased from recent highs. However, persistent dollar demand and geopolitical uncertainties may limit the currency’s upside.
The rupee closed at ₹95.44 against the US dollar in the previous session, registering a weekly decline of around 0.2%.
RBI Intervention Supports the Rupee
Continued intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has helped manage dollar demand and contain the rupee’s underlying weakness. However, importers’ dollar demand and maturities in the non-deliverable forward (NDF) market remain key pressures on the currency.
Crude Oil Prices Decline
Brent crude prices fell by more than 2% to around $86.50 per barrel, providing some near-term relief to the rupee. Lower crude prices could help reduce India’s import bill and ease demand for dollars.
Geopolitical Risks Remain a Concern
Despite the decline in oil prices, ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, particularly concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, continue to provide support to crude prices. This could restrict the rupee’s gains despite softer oil prices.
Outlook
Overall, the Indian rupee may witness a mild recovery as lower crude prices provide some support. However, strong importer dollar demand, NDF maturities and geopolitical risks are likely to keep the upside limited.
